The Green Man (TGM) & Kingz – Changes (22 Years of Basswerk)

The Green Man & Kingz first met and started making and performing music together in 1997 following The Green Man’s „Infinity“ release, which touched Kingz’ musical nerve. In 1998 they were both part of the Basswerk Sessions Vol. 1 compilation and Kingz became Cologne’s most accepted MC with a residency at Basswerk Sessions and touring through Germany, but stopped performing in 2001. It wasn’t until 2016 that they started making music again - having been connected as friends during the years. The widely appreciated “The moment is now“ track (relased 2016/ Basswerk 39) marked their comeback. The focus moved more to production and Kingz really took the place as a vocalist and lyricist. With a Basswerk’s 20 years anniversary release planned which got support by Kulturamt Köln in 2017, they elaborated their intersections in musical taste and histories culmulating in their very own sound.

The album is also about political and life themes/issues of our time. They discussed and debated lyrical themes, which came to life and on point with the help Kingz’ wife Vera Obeng. One track after another emerged and it became clear that this would be more than a compilation contribution, instead it became a whole new album project. However it wasn’t finished until the very end of 2018 and took them more than 2 ½ years of intense work to realise the visions and bring everything on point.

Additionally, various musicians did remixes of „The moment is now“ (including Basswerk resident Decon, Basicand Thorsten Quaeschning). They will be released on a separate EP.

So this album, the Remix-EP and also the above mentioned compilation are now part of a series of „22 Years of Basswerk“ releases in 2019 (supported by Kulturamt Köln). Check out the main other part of the project: „The Green Man (TGM) presents: 22 Years of Basswerk/ The Collab Sessions“ (CD with 16 collab tracks/remixes by The Green Man (TGM) with Digital, Klute, Aqua Sky, Skarra Mucci, David Boomah, Gregor Schwellenbach, Gourski, Seibel, Navigator, Freeze, Chevy, Brian Brainstorm, Thorsten Quaeschning (Tangerine Dream), Triou, FR33M4N & Zera) and various 2019 releases/ EP’s.

The Paths that We Take The paths that we take

 Scratching my head
 Trying to find the solution
To everyday problems leaving me disillusioned
"Less restrictions" are said to be a treat
Just watching the dangers as I leap
It's never easy - lot of pitfalls and huge holes
Feeling wheezy - distracted from achieving my goals
One wrong step could mean trouble
So inept - slip sliding in a double

 I need a refill - slowly reaching a standstill
Running on this treadmill - struggling uphill
As I'm weighing up my chances
 Not planning sly advances
Different era - new circumstances The choices we make Then it suddenly hits me It's like the “game of kings”
 Take charge of your destiny
Don't just see what life brings
 Don't wait for an epiphany
“Candidate moves” need to be found
 This ain't jeopardy
Step back - check out the options around
 Pick out 3 - 4 looking sound
To find the optimal - the choice most valuable The paths that we take Yeah - should be personal The paths that we take The choices we make In our lives
2.
We Keep Destroying the World We keep destroying the world - As it twirls
For me it's a mystery with all that history Need to touch ground Enough is enough of this merry go round
Getting dizzy and bewildered now let’s nail this one down
Over and over falling into same trap
For ever and ever stepping into the same crap

 So devastating seeing lands divided
How they can be so misguided?
Divide and conquer to feel empowered
It's the enemy's hour - they need to devour

You'd think once bitten twice shy
I guess the effect blurs as time goes by
 Committing blunder after blunder
 No end to the thunder
For me it's a mystery with all that history
Why we keep on going under Feeling the union I live in
In this continent I dwell in
 Things weren't decided on emotion
 Our destiny deliberately chosen
 So excuse my confusion
When I see the lack of fusion

Feeling the union I live in
 Just one world we’re given
Let's focus on unity - at least socially Steering unanimously
 Enough conflicts division
 Let’s make that our decision

Sincere 05:48
Sincere They claim they’re being sincere
 In all that you hear
“Ain’t committing no crime” they say
Time after time 2019 - Green Man and Kingz spreading the word From Colonia to the whole wild world More decency more grace Take heed of the powers that strike upon you
So-called “news” slapping you left right and centre
 Network jungle blurring the issue
 Unruly behaviour beyond peradventure

Some like to shock - some need the fright
Backing the left - the right Regardless of the plight
 Can’t they see their duty?
Can't they cease their ruthless rapacity?

 Lacking objectivity
Misuse - abuse of the words in the story
 Can’t they see their duty?
Can't they cease their ruthless rapacity?

Merely shaking your head to the headlines you read
Protest - Rebel - “speak up” I plead

Merely shaking your head to the headlines u read
Protest - rebel instead - “speak up" is my plea Make some noise Colonia - make some noise all of ya

Changes 05:29
Changes It's been going on for aeons It will be going on for years to come In this era especially - exponentially To and fro Getting you all to move - let's go Nature of the current - nature of the flow Listen - can't stop the motion Is it worth the commotion? Resisting the natural ways Is it really worth the praise? Embrace the changes Broaden your ranges Or hold damn tight to what you know "Blues" in a drum and bass view
6.
For Those Wavin’ the Flag For those wavin’ a flag
 Glorifying the rag

 Kind o’ weird
 Something that always bothered me
When I looked at it closely
The care people take in their pride
Where they cried their first cry
Of their nationality - being part of a majority
 Basking in reflected glory

 If problems arise?
 Time to blame the minority
 “Don’t you realise?
It's for the sake of the country”

No no no - you're mistaking me
There's nothing wrong with a healthy sense of national identity
 It's a delusion of a nationalist
To exclude others in cold blood claiming that life's bliss
 So conceited arrogant and egotistical
They don't care if the changes for others are detrimental
And them be calling themselves patriotic They just don't get it!

 In defence of the weak
 They're just "tagging along"
 Their future’s bleak
So they just want to be among
You're lucky If the cap fits - wear it
It doesn't? Well tough shit - bear it

 This desire for othering
 Is not an innate quality
 On the contrary
 Time after time in history
 We're justifying war - claiming we’re defenders
Killing the small - we're just pretenders

For once take up the viewpoint of the other
Not always assuming our culture or nation is better
So much energy wasted for the wrong cause
When we could be getting closer Avoiding senseless wars
Time could be spent on cooperation Enriching the diversity of our nation Yeah
Let's devote ourselves to cooperation Enriching the diversity of our nations

Interlude 00:28
8.
Time to come out - out of your shell
If you wanna feel great - wanna excel
Let down your guard and follow your heart
 Let's chance a new start

What's behind is simply the past
Your guard's up high made to last
Lower it down and see the light
Greet the sun - she shines so bright
9.
Feeling Fresh In goes all the goodness around you Out goes all the trouble you’re going through Coz the golden way to elevate in this day and age Is to meditate and reach a new state Feeling fresh - Feel Coz the golden way to elevate Is to meditate in this day and age

A Journey 03:47

Heroes 04:14
Heroes Imagine what could be What could be - what you could be Imagine what could be The possibilities Try and realise What could be What you could be Caught yourself going with the flow Let your true colours shows Yeah Leave the back row A change is essential Release your potential You got to be your own hero Introspection beyond good and evil No delusion or fiction your upheaval De novo from absolute zero Search your soul Here’s your goal be your own hero You gotta be your own hero Be your own hero Yes yes y’all - from absolute zero Imagine what could be The possibilities now now Try and realise What could be - what you could be Be your own hero Show your potential - its inside you From absolute zero Introspection beyond good and evil No delusion or fiction your upheaval De novo from absolute zero Search your soul Here’s your goal be your own hero

The Moment is Now It’s here Time is now ripe Face your fears now face life Like feelin’ the vibe of the drum and the bass The time is now - the time is in your face The moment is real so real For all to feel Forget the past - Forget the future No matter where you’re from - your culture Endeavour to live here to live now It’s clear so clear like the sound It’s clear so clear - the moment is now Green Man & Kingz 2016 Face your fears now - face life The moment is now

about

The Green Man & Kingz first met and started making and performing music together in 1997 following The Green Man’s „Infinity“ release on Basswerk, which touched Kingz’ musical nerve. In 1998 they were both part of the Basswerk Sessions Vol. 1compilation and Kingz became a charismatic resident at Basswerk Sessions @ Gebäude 9 and Cologne’s most accepted MC. They also toured a lot through
Germany back then, but Kingz stopped performing in 2000. It wasn’t until 2016 that they started making music again - having been connected friendly during the years. The widely appreciated “The Moment is Now“ track (relased 2016/ Basswerk 39)
marked their comeback – bot only in the clubs, but also in a lot of radio stations. Their focus changed to production rather than clubbing and Kingz took the place as a vocalist and lyricist while Greenman gained a lot of experience working with vocalists like Skarra Mucci, Peter Bouncer, Demolition Man, Navigator, David Boomah – or also a men’s choir (KMGV Kölner Männer-Gesang-Verein or opera singer Maria Kublashvili).

With a Basswerk’s 20 years anniversary release planned (which got support by Kulturamt Köln in 2017), they elaborated their intersections in musical taste and histories culmulating in their very own sound, which can be positioned somewhere between Wu-Tang Clan, DJ Premier, Calyx and Doc Scott - or between Air, Portishead and Marcus Intalex.

Lyrically, this album is quite far away from certain Rap tracks. Its more about peace, personal reflections and anti-racism or other political and life themes/issues of our time, such as „For Those Wavin A Flag“ or „We Keep Destroying the World“. They discussed and debated lyrical
themes, which came to life and on point with the help Kingz’ wife Vera Obeng. One track after another emerged and it soon became clear that this would be a whole new album project. However it wasn’t finished until the very end of 2018 and took them more than 2 ½ years of intense work to realize the visions and bring everything on point. It contains Drum & Bass, Hip Hop and Instrumental tracks.
Some D&B tracks like „Feels like Home or Feeling Fresh have a more easy vibe, while the opener „The Paths that We Take“ moves between Hip Hop and Soul.
Slower Instrumentals like "Where it began" or „A Journey“ add some cinematic sound adventures and varying intensities and speed to the album – and that title could have been a good name for the whole album as well.

Additionally, various musicians did remixes of „The moment is now“ (including Basswerk resident Decon, Basic, Thorge Meyer and Thorsten Quaeschning (from Tangerine Dream)). They will be released on a separate EP. So this album, the Remix-EP and also the above mentioned compilation are now parts of a series of „22 Years of Basswerk“ releases in 2019 (supported by Kulturamt
Köln) – with the album being part one.
